Therapy in Malta

English speaking therapist
in Malta: what to know.

Whether you are an expat, a returning Maltese resident, or simply more at ease processing your inner life in English, finding the right English speaking therapist in Malta is about more than language.

Therapy depends on language in a way that almost nothing else does. Not just whether you can be understood literally, but whether the therapist understands the context, the references, the cultural subtext of what you are bringing. That is why finding an English speaking therapist in Malta — one who thinks in English, not just translates into it — matters more than people sometimes expect.

Who usually looks for therapy in English in Malta?

The short answer is: more people than you might think.

There are the obvious cases: expats and international residents who live in Malta but whose emotional vocabulary is in English. People who grew up Maltese but were educated abroad and find that certain things are just easier to say in English. International remote workers. People from the UK or mainland Europe who want online therapy with a therapist they can actually communicate with. And Maltese people who simply feel more articulate in English when it comes to the kind of material therapy deals with.

All of these are legitimate. The question is the same in every case: who is the right person?

What to check when looking for an English speaking therapist in Malta

Is their English fluent or functional? There is a meaningful difference between a therapist who offers sessions in English and one who thinks, reflects, and responds in English. Therapy involves a lot of subtlety — connotation, tone, what is not said. You want someone for whom English is a genuine working language.

Are they properly qualified? The title "therapist" is not legally protected in Malta. The regulated qualification is the PPBM warrant, issued by the professional board to practitioners who have completed an accredited postgraduate training in psychotherapy. If you are looking for psychotherapy in English, check that the person holds a PPBM warrant.

What is their approach? Different therapeutic models work differently and suit different people. It is worth understanding whether someone practises CBT, Gestalt, psychodynamic therapy, or an integrative approach — not because you need to pick the right one in advance, but because knowing helps you decide whether their language around therapy resonates with you.

Do they offer online sessions? If you are not based in Malta or your schedule is complicated, online therapy removes a major barrier. Most English speaking therapy in Malta is also available online. For clients outside Malta, online is typically the only option.

Therapy in English for expats in Malta

If you are an expat, living in Malta brings a specific set of pressures that therapy can be particularly useful for. The adjustment period, the question of whether you made the right decision, the cultural gap between how life was and how it is now, homesickness that you do not quite feel entitled to, the performance of being fine. These are real things, and they tend to accumulate.

There is also a particular loneliness that comes from not having people around who remember you before — people who knew you before the move, before the reinvention, before the expat persona. A therapist does not fix that. But the process of being fully honest with someone, in your own language, without having to explain yourself from the beginning, has its own value.

Common questions

Is therapy in Malta available in English?

Yes. A number of therapists in Malta offer sessions in English, particularly in private practice. If you are searching for therapy in English, the most reliable first step is to check individual therapist websites and confirm directly. The PPBM register lists qualified practitioners but does not always specify language of practice.

Can I have online therapy in English from outside Malta?

Yes, if the therapist is licensed and insured to work with clients in your country. I am licensed under the Psychotherapy Profession Act and professionally insured to work with clients across the EU and UK.

Does it matter whether my therapist is Maltese or not?

Less than you might think. What matters is whether the person in front of you can understand what you are bringing, and whether you feel safe enough to bring it. Cultural background is one factor in that, but it is rarely the deciding one.
