Therapy for Expats · Online · EU & UK

You left home.
Some of it came with you,
some of it is part of the expat experience.

As an expat myself for 6 years, I understand that moving countries is one of the most disorienting things a person can do. Even when it's a choice you made freely and would make again, the emotional weight of it is real and often underestimated. The confusion around your feelings can be experienced as part of the move abroad, and this has a tendency to make things unclear.

What makes the
expat experience hard.

There is also the question of identity. Who you are tends to be partly shaped by where you are and who is around you. In a new country, those anchors shift. Some people find this liberating. Others find it quietly destabilising, and are not sure why.

Therapy for expats is a space to say the honest version of how things are, without the fear of its implications on your decision to become an expat.

Some of the things I can help you with:

Loneliness and isolation

Even in a busy new life, the quality of connection is often different. Acquaintances are plentiful. People who actually know you are far away.

Identity and belonging

Not quite from here, no longer simply from there. The question of where you belong can become persistent.

Grief for what was left behind

Leaving involves losses that often go unnamed: routines, relationships, family, a version of yourself that existed in a specific place. The weather.

Relationship strain

Moving puts pressure on partnerships and families in ways that are rarely discussed before the move and rarely acknowledged during it.

Cultural exhaustion

The constant low-level effort of navigating a different culture, different norms, a different language, a sense of humour that doesn't quite land. It adds up.

Anxiety about the future

Visas, career paths, whether to stay or go. Uncertainty about where you will be in five years is a particular kind of chronic stress.
