Couples Therapy · Malta & Online
Couples come to therapy at many different points in their lives; after a crisis, after years of distance, at the very early stages of the relationship when the foundations feel a little unsteady, or simply when they sense that the way things are is not how they want things to be. Whatever the reason may be, my role is to help you meet each other with respect, honesty and understanding.
Conversations that keep going round in circles with no resolution, or communication that has stopped altogether.
Working through infidelity, betrayal, or a significant breach of trust.
Two people living alongside each other rather than actually together.
Having children, loss, illness, relocation, retirement.
Arguments that repeat without resolution, or conflict that is avoided entirely.
Not sure whether to stay or go. Therapy can help clarify that, whatever the answer turns out to be.
I work from a Gestalt framework, which means sessions are present-focused and relational. I am paying attention to what is happening right now, between the two of you and between you and me, and using that as the material.
The aim is not to produce a set of communication techniques. It is to help you understand what is actually driving the dynamic between you, so that you have more genuine choice about how you respond to each other. The process of therapy is a resolving of fixed states, that allows a new flow between the two of you.
It is not arbitration. I will not tell you who is right or wrong. It is not a space to build a case against your partner. It is not a last resort before separation, though it can be useful even then. And it is not a sign that your relationship is failing. I am also not able to provide therapy for couples engaged in active legal proceedings or custody disputes relating to their relationship.
I work with couples from all walks of life: different genders, same gender, married or not, cohabiting or not. My practice is LGBTQI+ affirming. The work does not change depending on the form the relationship takes.
I work primarily in English, but I am comfortable also with Maltese. Sessions can be productive regardless of nationality or background.
Sessions can start with just one of you. If your partner is not ready to come, or if you want to understand your own part in the dynamic before bringing them in, individual sessions can be a useful place to begin. Sometimes one person shifting changes the relationship without the other person even being in the room. Things that are brought in individual sessions remain confidential to those sessions, unless you wish to bring them into the joint work.
